In the district
where Kunjab Jampa Ling is, there is a population of 11,000 and the majority
of people are poor or very poor. 1,000 people have arrived in this district
within a year from the summer of 2004, from the six Mongolian provinces
where they were unable to survive. Most arrive in a distressed state.
Assistance
for families
In 2005 we have provided two gers for families who were renting gers at
a cost of $12 and $15 a month. This immediately gives them some financial
relief. A family size ger costs €660/$800/£450
We also provide food, coal and any other
items needed. A member of my Mongolian team works with the local governor
and his committee on a 12 month basis. She visits all the families on
a regular basis.
Money was also provided for two children who needed operations.
Kindergarten Project
The kindergarten in Mongolia is the equivalent of primary schools up to
the age of 8 years. It comes under the Government Education Authority,
but the parents have to contribute to the food the children are given.
This costs €12/$15/£10 a month for each child, which poor families
cannot afford. But without these early years at kindergarten, when the
children join the secondary school at 8 years they are already behind.
Last year we renovated two rooms in the kindergarten nearest our centre,
and now provide care for 35 children between the ages of 3-8 years. In
the kindergarten they are given three meals a day, in a warm, caring and
learning environment. We provide warm clothes and boots for the children.
Because the children are being cared for it means the parents can look
for work without worry. Older children can go to school instead of being
used as child minders for younger siblings.
I still need sponsors for these children - €12/$15/£10 a month
for each child
Hot meal project
25 more children are provided with a hot meal on the way to school, as
well as copy books pencils etc. and as necessary warm clothes.
Also Kunjub Jampa Ling Center provides a quiet, warm room for the young
people to do homework.
English lessons
During the summer of 2005, 80 children were given English lessons on a
daily basis, taken to the Traditional theatre, and out to the countryside
for a days picnic.
Sewing project
The sewing project continues very successfully and we are hoping to expand
this project in the future. A designer from Ireland visited in October
2005 in order to help with clothing designs that might be more marketable
in the West.
The items produced this year so far are beautiful hand made jackets and
purses.
Can you help us to sell them?? Provide a market for these goods?
The severe climatic conditions
of Mongolia create incredible difficulties for homeless children who roam
the streets of Ulaanbaatar.
Maitreya Charity aims to lift the burden these children carry of struggling
merely to survive. We offer them hope through the teaching of Dharma and
practical help in daily life.

Sponsors
are needed in the West for as
many individuals as possible, giving them
the assistance necessary to take their first steps into a fuller life.
