The Gobi

There are many difficult and entrenched problems in the Gobi regions of rural Mongolia. Ven.Panchen Otrul Rinpoche has been requested by people there to both teach in the area and address the social problems that exist.

Many difficulties are similar to urban Ulaanbaatar,
but the remote living conditions of the Gobi make them that much more difficult to address.

Malnutrition exists throughout the Gobi regions

Dharma teachings continued throughout the winter to both adults and children.
Rinpoche blessed a small piece of land where a large Stupa will be built when sufficient money has been raised.

Felt Making Project 24 women have now been trained in making felt and knitting.

Meals for Children Hot daily meals for 22 of the poorest children, warm clothes, school books, and multi-vitamins have been provided. A small building was purchased for this.

Hospital Treatment Asral will pay for five more people to go to Ulaanbaatar for hospital treatment.

Summer Camp 108 of the poorest children were taken to a summer camp for two days.

Sustainable Ondershil

Panchen Otul Rinpoche has been visiting Ondershil Sum now for a few years to teach dharma and give his blessing to the community.

Maitreya Charity help thus far has been focused on providing sponsorship for children to go to school. This remains an important contribution toward the welfare of many families.

In recent discussions with local government officials and members of the community other ways to help the community were looked at. They are primarily interested in developing self-sustaining activities that will provide long term financial security for peopleof the area. Income coming into the settlement at Ondershil at the mement comes from the sale of wool and meat. We are looking into developing a scheme whereby the traditional skills of felting, stitching, sewing and leatherwork can be used to create employment.

An area suitable for growing vegetables is also within travelling distance, but a water supply is needed. It would cost $10,000 to sink a well in this area. That would enable a few families to move there and make an income from growing vegetables for the area.

Family group from the Gobi

Some families can no longer continue in the countryside. They flee to Ulaanbaatar, totally destitute and in search
of a way to survive.

Many live in the tents (gers) they bring with them from the Gobi.

Can you help? We are looking for sponsors for individuals, and contributions toward our larger projects
Please contact us now if you can help.
